Concern over mining in the Coromandel Coastal Marine Area

There is real concern from individuals and groups like the Coromandel Watchdog that the proposed District plan will weaken controls over mining , the term  Coastal Zone   has been replaced with the term coastal environment without imposing rules around mining in and around the coastal zone, leaving our coastal areas vulnerable to underground and surface mining.

The group Coromandel Watchdog is calling calling for all mining activities in the Coastal Environment to be prohibited.

The Surfbreak Protection Society is also concerned about this development and is calling on surfers and all interested in the preservation of our coastal margins to make a submission on the  Thames Coromandel District Council’s  proposed District Plan to follow this link to the Coromandel Watchdog’s website for more information and fill in their easy to use submission form.

The Proposed Thames-Coromandel District Plan is open for submissions until the 14th of March – The Surfbreak Protection will be submitting as the implications for mining activities near surfbreaks are obvious and potentially adverse.
