Its been a busy summer here at SPS we are looking to actively engage with WIAL over its planned extension into Lyall Bay in May we plan to release an initiative to gain further recognition of Aotearoa’s surfbreaks, and we have not yet set a date for the release of our comprehensive review Of Waikato Regional Council’s performance regarding the protection of the Whangamata Bar. In the meantime there is plenty here to read about.
It is the centenary of Duke Kahanamoku first visiting New Zealand in 1915 , The Duke went on to demonstrate his mastery of Surfing and swimming to large audiences, the popularity of surfing is often linked back to his tour of the dominions .
SPS will be supporting the New Brighton Pier & Foreshore Society and the Wellington Boardriders club in publicizing their planned events, if you wish to donate time, money, or need to know more, contact SPS here .

While publishing this article, SPS are unaware of any celebrations planned by either Lyall Bay SLSC, or Muriwai Life Guard Service to commemorate the Duke’s demonstrations on our shores .
SPS applauds both the New Brighton Pier & Foreshore Society and Wellington Boardriders Club for taking the initiative to celebrate our surfing heritage.
To make sure your friends and family are aware of these events use the new ‘forward to a friend’ link function at the top of this newsletter.
We were planning to upload more video on the disturbing nutrient loading taking place in the estuaries of Whangamata , but the aforementioned subjects required immediate attention. If you haven’t viewed our existing video, its right here on Youtube. We plan to have more to release midway through February, including the draft report prepared for Thames Coromandel District Council highlighting the failings of the E3 wastewater plants on the Coromandel Eastern seaboard.
We have had a load of articles and research over the last few months and it is preferred that we get out our newsletters in the middle of the month…SPS will strive to publish our monthly newsletters on a more regular basis from now on… yeah right. 😉
The bottom line is that we will always have monthly updates regardless, please pass on the surfbreak newsletters to your kindred spirits.
Cheers
The SPS crew.
