WIAL seeks deletion of Lyall Bay’s Corner Surfbreak

WIAL is seeking the removal of Lyall Bay’s Corner surf break from the Greater Wellington Regional Council’s proposed schedule of protected surf breaks in its submission to The Proposed Natural Resources Plan (PNRP).

Not only that, WIAL are seeking deletion of the specific policy (Policy P51) that directs councils and developers to protect all of the Wellington Regional surf breaks as listed in Schedule K Significant Surf Breaks.

What does this mean To me?

If WIAL choose to appeal the plan there is the potential that surfers will have no protection, not just for Lyall Bay surf breaks, but for surf breaks across the entire Wellington region.

Without the protection of surf breaks in the PNRP, WIAL are essentially under no obligation, regarding impacts of the planned airport extension on Lyall Bay’s surf breaks – especially the Corner.

What can I do?

Make a further submission to the GWRC Natural Resources Plan opposing Wial’s submission (submitter 282) seeking the removal of protection around Wellingtons surf break,s – especially the corner.
